We would like to congratulate Mrs Mary Couston who was recently honoured in Melbourne for her dedication to the education of young people. About 400 staff, most of whom are teachers, received awards for 40, 45 and 50 years of service at the Recognition of Service to Victorian Education ceremony. Recipients shared their memories of beginning work in schools, how times have changed and their career highlights.
Mrs Couston, who marked 40 years of service, trained and taught in NZ before coming to Australia. She taught in Tasmania, NSW and Victoria, during which she spent a year on Exchange in Canada. Mrs Couston says that the biggest changes over the years has been in the use of technology in classrooms, having carpets on the floors in the rooms, instead of wooden floors with a roll up mat for children to sit on, and having air conditioning and heating at the touch of a switch. She is still in touch with some children she taught in NZ, and their parents through Christmas cards each year.
We are looking forward to welcoming Mrs Couston back to Melrose at the beginning of Term 3. She has been missed.
